Mersea House

Contemporary calm by the coast.

Set within the natural beauty of Mersea Island, this two-storey modern home is both rooted and refined. With timber cladding, expansive glazing, and a palette drawn from nature, the house responds to its coastal setting with quiet confidence: a warm, contemporary retreat where every detail feels considered.

The project was designed to feel open yet sheltered, expressive yet serene. Surrounded by lush gardens and softened by material warmth, Mersea House is a home for slow living and thoughtful design.

The brief

From our earliest conversations, the vision for this home was one of contrast: to combine bold architectural form with a lightness of touch, and to ensure modern family living didn’t come at the expense of softness, comfort or character.

We worked closely with the client to shape a design that celebrated connection between inside and out, material and mood, light and landscape. The intention was always to keep things simple, grounded, and deeply personal.

The design

The resulting design is defined by its clean geometry and layered materiality. Clad in rich timber and punctuated by large-format windows, the house frames views of greenery at every turn. Both front and back gardens play an active role in the composition, extending the living space outdoors and softening the home’s architectural lines.

Internally, the design embraces warmth and colour. A pastel palette of soft greens and dusty pinks adds a contemporary charm, while elegant timber elements thread through the space, bringing cohesion and texture. It’s a home that feels calm and quietly expressive, with each space flowing effortlessly into the next.

Materials and detail

Material choice was key to this project’s success. Timber cladding gives the façade warmth and natural variation, while expansive glazing ensures a strong connection to the landscape without overwhelming the form. Lighting was considered inside and out, with subtle night-time illumination adding drama without distraction.

The home’s interior detailing brings a gentle, mid-century influence, carefully balanced with contemporary lines and neutral tones. The result is a sophisticated family home that’s both modern and enduring.

The outcome

Mersea House captures everything we value in residential design: simplicity, sensitivity and a strong sense of place. It’s a home that sits comfortably in its setting: a confident addition to the island, and a space shaped around the lives of the people who live there.

This is modern architecture at its most grounded: refined, responsive, and deeply human.
