As families grow and routines evolve, the demands we place on our homes change too. For one of our clients in Kent, the existing 1960s bungalow on their semi-rural plot no longer reflected how they lived – or how they wanted to live. It lacked space, light, and the modern comforts of a contemporary home. But rather than uproot, they saw potential in the site they already loved.
Here’s how we helped them unlock it and shape a home that reflects who they are today.
The challenge: Outgrown and out of sync
The original bungalow was modest and familiar, but increasingly out of step with the client’s lifestyle and ambitions. With a growing family and an eye for design, they envisioned a spacious, light-filled home that embraced the landscape, without overwhelming the surrounding conservation area.
They didn’t want to move. But they did want more: more space, more light, more modernity. The question was how to get there.
Our approach: Design that listens
From our earliest conversations, we knew this would be a collaborative journey. The client came to us with a clear vision and the open-mindedness to evolve it together.
We began with feasibility studies for a large-scale extension, but quickly realised a full replacement offered better long-term value and design flexibility. What emerged was a bold yet respectful new-build: a two-storey family home that sat comfortably on the plot while dramatically improving space, light and flow.
The result: Rural modern living, reimagined
At the heart of Oak House is a simple yet powerful architectural idea: a timber ‘hood’ that wraps the home, anchoring it within its leafy context. This is paired with an expressive dormer-style full-height window arrangement on the first floor clad in a distinctive zinc.
Inside, a dramatic double-height core connects both levels, flooding the heart of the home with natural light and creating a sense of arrival and spaciousness. Open-plan living areas flow out into the garden, offering flexibility for family life and everyday connection to nature.
Throughout, the palette is calm, purposeful and built to last: natural timber, smooth render, and standing-seam zinc come together to create a home that’s both grounded and refined.
A true self-build success story
Oak House is a reflection of what becomes possible when clear vision meets thoughtful design. Our client trusted us to challenge assumptions, unlock potential, and create something that felt both ambitious and authentic.
The result is a family home that feels modern, rooted, and made for real life – with light, space and design-led thinking at every turn.
“Together with our client, we shaped a home that feels grounded and modern, expressive but respectful. A home with light at its core, space to grow, and a lasting sense of place.”
